Sex Pistols Set Record - AGAIN!
Back in 2019 Wessex Auction Rooms set a record price for the sale of the much talked about 'Holy Grail' withdrawn Sex Pistols God Save The Queen single on A&M Records.
Fast forward five years, and a few worldwide sales later, Wessex Auction Rooms once again had a copy up for auction in our specialist Vinyl Records and Memorabilia auction on Friday 5th July 2024.
This particular copy had been in the possession of our vendor since 1984 when she left A&M Records. She had been the custodian of the full box of remaining withdrawn copies since 1977... the much discussed 'A&M Vault' was in fact the bottom drawer of our vendor's desk!
The copy offered for sale at Wessex Auction Rooms was in unplayed condition with original sleeve and gained interest from punk collectors, vinyl record collectors, and pop culture memorabilia collectors from every corner of the globe.
A final sale price of £24,320 (including premium) set a new world record price for and A&M God Save The Queen.
Vinyl Records and Music Memorabilia specialist Martin Hughes commented:
"Having now sold three copies of the withdrawn God Save The Queen single, it always feels special just to be the temporary custodian of such a rare piece of music, punk, and pop culture history. I wouldn't be surprised if we break that record again if I am lucky enough to handle the sale of another copy"
